We are helping a child Sandeep, who is suffering from 90 per cent hearing loss since the age of 2. According to Dr. Milind Kirtane (Consultant ENG Surgeon – Hinduja Hospital), Sandeep is suffering from Bilateral Profound Sensorineural Hearing Loss. The treatment Dr. Milind Kirtane has recommended is Cochlear Implant surgery which is suppose to imporve his speech perception, educational and social opportunities and quality of life.

Further to this mail, Dilnavaz from the India Helps team verified the case with Dr Kirtane, who would be operating pro bono for this patient.
Here is her report back:
The case is genuine. Dr. Kirtane doesn't charge for operating on children born deaf. Even in this case, he's waived his fees, but the costs to be incurred are OT costs, the cost of the implant itself and allied charges. Also, post surgery, the child will need some years of speech therapy and post-surgical care and that costs quite a bit too.

A little help for a boy to have a normal spine

Ankit is a dhobis son in Kolkata. He has been referred to us by Santanu Ghose, a gentleman who has been following up on him. Ankit has a congenital spinal deformity and needs an operation to correct this and allow him to have a normal life. Baisali from our Kolkata chapter has be following up on this and this is her latest update:

This is the update on Ankit, the dhobi's son. I showed the x-rays and reports to my friend, Dr. Argho Roy. He said the surgery is complicated and the recovery period a long drawn-out one. If not done by an absolute expert, the operation can easily be botched up.

Ankit's family took him and the reports to Ramkrishna Seva Pratishtan (RSP), the hospital where they have been getting him checked right from the beginning. The 'foreign doctor' (couldn't catch his name) gave him a thorough check-up. He and his team will be operating upon the boy, free of charge. Prosthesis and post-operative care will come up to around Rs. 25,000/- at the most. Intense physio-therapy also required.

Right now the boy needs an MRI at the earliest for which Rs. 9,000/ is required. The boys father has 4k, my father has offered to chip in 2k and I can put in 2k as well.

He lost his hand while trying to save his shop from being blown up. Read about it here.

 

Case History:
Prabhu Kumar Chaudhary a resident of a village in Rajasthan ran an electric appliance repair store in Naigaon, on the outskirts of Mumbai. He was injured while saving his shop from being blown up by crude bombs thrown by thieves who were targetting a nearby jeweller store.
He has lost his left palm as a bomb exploded in his hand. His leg was also injured but operated on by the doctors successfully at the Cardinal Gracias Hospital in Vasai.

Family:
His sister lives in Bhiwandi. He has a cousin, Mohan, who is currently helping him at the hospital. Parents are illiterate have come down from the village but unable to understand what the doctors have to say hence Mohan is of great help. After getting discharged he will be moving in with his sister in Bhiwandi.

Financial Situation:
The hospital bills are close to a lakh with no one to repay them. Post operative care will be additional. Condition of amputed arm not very great he will not be able to work as a mechanic any more the Doctors are still assessing what best they can do to help him. This could mean a longer hospital stay and more operations.

Appeal for flood relief, Ponnur, Gunter District.

I received this appeal in the mail yesterday:

Hello,

I am part of a small group of people that is supporting an orphanage in Ponnur in the Gunter District. Surrounding the orphanage is a large number of flood victims that need help. Here is a list of the things they need:

1) Clothes to wear , now the childrens and younger's and elders doen't have clothes to wear.
2) To stand for their lives if we could be able to supply bamboos and tatched leaves to wear on their houses if we could be able to supply this they can wear tatched houses to live.
3) Rice bags, if we can distribute RICE it will be useful to them to cook food and to eat.
4) Cooking vessels if we are able to supply cooking vessels to them they will be cook the rice in the vessels and they can eat.
5) Water, now our area water was impurified by floods. If we are able to supply water they can drink this purified water which doesn't contains impurities.

The orphanage is OK and does not need your assistance. It is the people around the orphanage that need help. The orphanage is prepared to serve as a distribution point for the flood victims. People affiliated with the orphanage are ready to volunteer, if they can get the things the flood victims need.

I'm off to Kodaikanal in about 10 days and no, this won't be one of the usual trips. I will volunteer briefly at my friend Zainab Ghadiyali's project--the Indian chapter of the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC).

Zainab is the Field Operations Manager for Project Kodaikanal and is responsible for managing the logistics of FIMRC's work in India. As part of her duties, she works closely with hospital and creche staff to coordinate volunteering and public health activities for the welfare of the underprivileged children in the area.

Zainab & I would appreciate it if you can do your bit for the children by donating some things. Mainly, they seek:

AN APPEAL

Ram Bhau Jadhav is a 36yr male who was admitted on 11th Jan 2009. Reg No 1332.at Sassoon Hospital, with an atlanto axial dislocation (broken neck). At the time of admission he was quadriplegic (paralysed below the neck). With traction he has recovered the use of his left upper and lower limbs. He is still bed ridden. Doctors will now attempt to assist fusion using transarticular screws and plates if necessary.
Currently the equipment required for conducting this surgery is available at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital ,where the surgeon Dr Sunil Nadkarni is willing to conduct the surgery free of cost. In addition Deenanath hospital will not charge for the use of the OT and subsequent post-operative care.
However, we need to raise funds for the implant and medicines (approximately Rs 35,000/-). His family members have abandoned him and there is no way that he can go out and collect the necessary funds. Therefore I appeal to you all to contribute whatever you can. Every penny will be helpful. The money can be given to SOFOSH from whom you will get a receipt which allows tax deduction. The surgery has to be done urgently.

It is indeed heartening to see the number of emails coming in wanting further information on how to contribute to flood relief work. It is moments like this that reinforce my belief that every Indian, regardless of personal circumstance, is keen to help a fellow Indian in trouble.

I recieved the detailed mail from Goonj yesterday, requesting specifics for flood relief. This is an URGENT APPEAL to join GOONJ in its campaign 'RAHAT FLOODS' to provide support to the victims of one of the worst floods in the last hundred years. The situation is grim and millions of people are affected by the devastation.

Family Background:

Rachana is the lone child to her parents. She got married to Rajendra Ghag, a police constable and had two children from him. However, misfortune struck early and she lost her husband in 2004 due to heart attack. She is survived by two children – Sailee aged 11 and son Gaurav aged 6. She was struck by breast cancer in 2006. She had to give up her job in a Diamond factory due to her failing health.

Ms. Ghag came in contact with Bhaktivedanta Hospital due to the efforts of Mr. Deven Chopra and Mr. Rajesh Talreja. Help this boy

Sometime ago, a gentleman from Kolkata, Santanu Ghose, had written in to us about a young boy, his dhobi's son who had a spinal problem, for which an immediate operation was required.
An India Helps team member from the Kolkata chapter spoke with Mr Ghose, who further investigated the case and referred the child to Dr Tirthankar Guha Thakurta (His note is attached below). The child needs surgery for which the expenses are working out to approximately Rs 22,000 only for the prosthetic, the surgery, the hospital stay, the medicines etc, would be separate.

Letter from Dr Guha Thakurta:

I got an opportunity to meet the young child on Saturday. He has a congenital Scoliosis, which is kind of an abnormal bending of the vertebral column. In future this can compress upon the spinal cord and produce painful and paralytic neurological symptoms.

He has been advised orthopedic re-constructive surgery by consultants at RKM Seva Sadan and I have reviewed all the reports done so far.

He is definitely in need of a surgical reconstruction to prevent a disabled adulthood.

The surgery is expensive and if any financial help can be offered to them, it will be great.

There is an urgent requirement for A –ve blood. If any of you are willing to donate, please help! The patient is suffering from blood cancer. She will be needing platelets (colorless bodies that are present in blood). Once these are donated, these get reformed within 3/4 days and at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Parel, Mumbai.

There will be a blood test for the donor at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Parel, Mumbai.
A donor can go to TMH as per his/her convenient day. (any possible day from tomorrow)
Next day, it will be clear from the reports, if the donor's blood is suitable for the patient..

Large parts of North Bihar have been hit by a breach in an embankment of river Bagmati.
More than 50 villages in districts such as Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur have been hit by the deluge. The state government is giving 50kg wheat, 50kg rice and Rs.250 as cash to each affected family. Relief work is slow and as many as one lakh people have been displaced. The India Helps team is involved in dispersing the information about the flood and relief work being carried in Bagmati through an NGO Samajik Shaikshanik Vikas Kendra (SSVK).

SSVK is working towards the rehabilitation of the displaced people. Please contribute to SSVK in whatever ways you can. The topmost priority of SSVK is to arrange for the food, clothing, medicines, shelter, and drinking water. Contributions are welcome in cash or kind.

Help Abhishek

Abhishek is a young 30 year old man, who was working as a brand manager in Britannia Industries until recently. An innocuous fever led to the discovery of cancer within his body - and he has been diagnosed with Bi-phenothypic Acute Leukimia (BAL) a type of blood cancer. He is to undergo matched unrelated donor transplant - the cost for which is USD 20,000 or roughly Rs 1 crore.

He has undergone three sessions of chemotherapy till now, and donors are being sourced by doctors from the Apollo hospital (Chennai) and CMC (Christian Medical college, Vellore).

Currently Rs 55 lakhs needs to be updated for the transplant. The family does not need any financial support other than raising this mammoth amount for medical bills.

Since the schools normally start in June, they are keeping end of May as the last day for contribution, so that the amount can be delivered to the organization.
