Update on Sunita Yadav

We met the Yadavs yesterday.

They arrived in Bombay day before and are staying in Thane with Mr. Yadav's younger son-in-law. They have obtained the duplicate death certificates from the BMC which will enable them to claim pension from the late husband's employer.

The Yadavs were also to meet the District Collector at the Old Customs House to claim the Rs. 50,000 cheque that they had put a stop payment on it since the brother-in-law had absconded with it. He needs to confirm to me whether the collector has re-issued the cheque. Sunita's job with the railways has been confirmed and they have requested that she be posted in UP and the railway officers have said that they will try their best to accommodate their request. In total the Yadavs have received Rs. 5 lakhs from the government, 4.5 lakhs from us, 1 lakh from Shah Rukh Khan and are to receive nearly 9 lakhs from the railways. That in addition to the pension Sunita should receive is going to make for a fairly comfortable life for them. We have also told them that they should ideally set aside half the money in a fixed deposit for Sheetal to mature over 3-5 years to be used for her continuing education.

The last thing that they requested was that Sunita's brother Santosh, who was also injured in the CST attacks, has applied for a job with District Collector's office in both Gazipur and Jaunpur districts in UP. They would appreciate any help in expediting this application.

Here's what's happened so far:



Sunita Yadav has got a job with the Railways but is awaiting her posting. They are not certain whether it is going to be Mumbai or not. If she moves back to Mumbai, we will help her with housing etc. if she needs it. We understand her younger brother lives in Thane and she could stay with them in the interim.



Right now we've wired the entire 4.5 lakhs to her account with SBI since opening an FD from here has proved to be a hassle because of red tape. The account is in her name. This branch is on the RTGS network and has also been notified as a core banking branch so any person wishing to wire money to her would need to speak to their banker and provide the details below. It will take a few days for all wires to clear, especially those outside of the SBI network.



We have been trying to call Mr. Yadav to find out when he will be arriving in Mumbai to file the papers for collecting the duplicate death certificate since Sunita needs that to be able to claim compensation & pension from her husband's employers. But getting through to him has been very difficult as he leaves the phone at home and messages to him don't seem to get delivered. We'll keep at it and let you know when they're due in Mumbai.

Update on the Yadavs

I spoke to Mr. Yadav on saturday. The brother in law has returned the compensation cheque to Sunita - he probably realized there's little he could do with a crossed cheque in someone elses name. But he still has the original death certificate.
Sunita and Sheetal's bank accounts should be up and running this week. Their village only has an SBI branch which was on holiday till today.
Will keep you guys posted on any further developments.

Just received this from M:

We spoke to Mr. Yadav on Sunday. He, Sunita and Sheetal have reached their village in UP safely. We understand that Sunita had approached her in-laws asking whether she could live with them, but as we had already predicted to him, they want nothing to do with her or Sheetal and have turned them away. Sunita and Sheetal had to actually spend the night in the streets before they could return to Mr. Yadav's home. Before they left, we had told him that going to the in-laws wasn't a good idea but I guess they decided to try anyways. The brother in law who stole the death certificate and the compensation cheque is still MIA and no one knows where to find him.



Mr. Yadav confirmed that he is in the process of setting up bank accounts for Sunita and Sheetal and once we receive details of the bank accounts, we plan to transfer around 3 – 3.5 lakhs to them. They are going to return to Mumbai in early January to get the duplicate death certificate and to file the compensation claims. We have helped him get the necessary affidavits in place and now it's just a matter of pushing the file through the system. He is going to call us once he gets back into the city.
