SUPPORT MAHAK,AN ENDEAVOUR TO PROVIDE BASIC LITERACY TO GIRL CHILDREN
OF A VILLAGE

Mahak is the name of a voluntary non-profit education institute
set-up by Ahambhumika to facilitate education the daughters of
labourers of the village of Mahabadia, Bhopal. Mahak is an extra
effort meant to assist educating girls in the rural areas where their
education usual takes a backseat for more reasons than one. At Mahak
we are making basic efforts to spread literacy among the daughters of
the labourers of Mahabadia, who otherwise would've never been able to
go to school. Usually such girls are supposed to take care of the
house at younger age when their parents are off to work and join their
parents in their labour to earn an extra penny when they get older. We
began by trying to convince the parents about the benefits of
educating their daughter and how it would help them in housework as
well as their labour in future. We explained how they'll be able to
demand a better pay for their labour if they are educated enough.
After a lot of persuasion most of them agreed to send their daughters
to our literacy centre for a short period of two hours everyday from
3:00 pm to5:00pm.With an initial start-off of 22 girls from the age
group of 5 to 12,Mahak has been a decent success till now.At present
there are 30 girl children . We have started with teaching them
reading and writing Hindi and basic Arithmetic and hope to progress in
this as well. We have also started drawing and painting activity to
make this initiative child friendly. To keep continue this activity
smoothly we are making efforts to raise fund for the following
requirements:-

We need Rs.1200=00 for the purchase of stationery materials for the 30
girl children. ( An average expenditure of Rs.40=00 is incurred to
provide each girl child stationery materials every month)

We need Rs.1500=00 for the purchase of drawing materials for 30 girl
children (An average expenditure of Rs.50=00 is incurred to provide
each girl child drawing materials every month)

We are also aiming to start vocational activities like stiching, block
printing, embroidery & doll making for the girl children which
require fund .

Please feel free to contribute as per your convenience. You may
further support us by spreading words to the like minded people.
This will be a great help for us. As our organization is not funded by
any corporate or government. All our initiatives are taken up with the
support of individual contribution only. At the moment we need support
of people to contribute for the stationery articles, drawing materials
. We will update our generous donors about our activities via mail
and newsletter alongwith with photographs from time to time. The
people interested to support us may please mail us at

Vote for Aarti Home here and help them win the Impact Awards

I received this letter from a friend, and this is definitely a worthy cause. Do vote for this if you support the girl child.

Hi Kiran.

How art thou?! Long time!

You know about Aarti Home, the NGO I volunteer with? Well, we are trying to get something called Impact Awards - it is decided based on the number of votes it gets online. This will give us enough money for food for our children at the orphanage for a year. This as you know is our most basic need.

Sandhya Aunty (who is the founder-president) has been working for the girl child for 20 years now. She has pumped in huge amounts of her own money and continues do do so, and her energy and commitment to the cause - it has to seen to be believed.

She is a normal person like you and me - used to hold a teaching job, had two daughters (one of who was my IIT batchmate) and ran a house always full of visiting relatives and friends. What is different about her is that she has saved at least a few thousand girl babies from being killed or sold and abused, helped hundreds of students who did not have money to study further, helped thousands of women earn their own money and explained to lakhs why a girl is as good as a boy. I can go on and on about her team's selflessness - something I have personally experienced, truly a very rare thing in today's world. They have spread it so much that it has actually impacted the gender ratio in Kadapa district.

As you know, Aarti runs an orphanage for abandoned girls, a school for kids who cannot pay fees, a skills development program to make women able to earn their own money and therefore dignity, and many many programs to tell folks why the girl child deserves to live with dignity.

Folks in Kadapa district recognise this and there are long queues there wanting to vote, however they are unable to do so because of erratic electricty and pathetic net connection.

So a request - please can you vote and help get us votes via your blog and FB? Also tell other people?

It is a super simple process - just click on this link above after signing into FB, click on 'Vote for this Entry' and you are done! We need to do this in the next one week.
Please help!
Thanks & cheers,
N

'If you would lift me up, you must be on higher ground' - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The last I wrote about the dire need for a transport minivan to be able to carry out the  expanding activities of NGO Ahambhumika into Mohabadia, Bodakho and surrounding villages, was in mid February (1). Three months on, I am still seeking funds for it.

I would be deluding you if I said I had not made good collections towards it. Some rather magnanimous donors have come forward with funds – all of which are equally worthy towards Ahambhumika's purpose of purchasing the minivan.

The Tata Venture minivan worth INR 4,60,000 we had set to procure can be a reality for us if we can make a further collection of INR 1, 25, 000.

This is an honest, urgent and a beseeching plea for the balance funds for the minivan. Come summer and some of Ahambhumika's critical work awaits the need of a minivan. I have stood outside of the Tata showroom looking at the minivan Ahambhumika needs but cannot afford as of now.

From the very core of my belief in Ahambhumika's work I hope there will not be many more miles to making the transport minivan a reality.

NOTE: Those who have already donated towards this purpose MAY NOT contribute again.

Appeal: Family struggling to raise money for victim’s treatment

An appeal on behalf of a driving accident victim who is critical. Anyone wishing to contribute to her treatment is requested to contact the father (number below) directly.
K

Kiran,

As discussed, this is the story that appeared in the Hindustan Times
today about Priyanka Rai, the only surviving victim of the Juhu car
crash.

The victim's family is struggling to pay her medical bills at the
CritiCare Hospital, Andheri.

Her father's name is Markandeya Rai (+919322056035).

_____________________________________________________________________

Family struggling to raise money for victim's treatment, JUHU MUMBAI:

Advanced medical care for Priyanka Rai, 23, the only surviving victim
of the three girls who were injured in a car crash at Juhu on March
30, may get delayed because of lack of funds, her family said.

Rai has been admitted in the intensive care unit at Criticare
Hospital, Andheri, from March 31. "Priyanka was the main earning
member of our family. We have already borrowed money and finished all
our savings. Her surgeries are yet to happen," said Markandey Rai, her
father, who works in a transport company and earns around Rs14,000 a
month.
Rai worked at a travel agency that organises corporate outbound
programmes and earned around Rs24,000 a month. The company has
contributed around Rs3 lakh for her treatment.

The family lives in Kalyan. Rai's sister, who recently appeared for
her Class 12 exams, has taken up a part-time job. Her elder brother
works as a steward in a restaurant. The cost of her medical treatment
could run up to Rs8 lakh to Rs10 lakh, doctors said.

"Priyanka has serious injuries and she was on ventilator for almost
two weeks. She has started responding to her name being called out.
But she may need surgeries and will take a long time to get back to
normalcy," said Dr Abhay Vispute,

Priyanka had multiple injuries — fractures to ribs and vertebrae and
head injury. She was taken off the ventilator three days ago.
Her mother, a homemaker, finds it hard to sit in the intensive care
unit without being worried all the time. "Our extended family is not
in Mumbai and we are trying very hard to manage everything. I have not
been going to work since the accident happened," she said.

The family said Rai had been saving money every month to buy jewellery
for her wedding. "She should have been getting married soon but now I
don't know how long it will take to repay the loans. But I want to do
everything to ensure that she starts walking again. Doctors said she
will be fine but it will take a long time," said her father.

APPEAL FOR HELP | YOUTH IN NEED OF URGENT MEDICAL TREATMENT | CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

Background:

Jalaluddin Mir is a 24 year old boy from a family of very modest means hailing frm Ashmuqam in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir. His father Mohammad Ramzan Mir is a caretaker in a shrine. The patient, Jalal, works for the J&K Muslim Waqf Board on a temporary basis earning only Rs. 2000/- per month.

In October 2011, Jalaluddin Mir was brought by his family to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar for treatment of the renal problems he had somehow developed. But the doctors at SKIMS failed to diagnose his condition or even acknowledge the problem. As his condition deteriorated, his family was compelled to shift him to Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on the 1st of Feb, 2012.

Current status:

The doctors have advised kidney transplant. The family has managed to find a donor who is also being examined at Ganga Ram hospital and the expenses of those tests are also being borne by the family.

The patient is being examined by:

Dr A K Bhalla (Senior Nephrologist)

Dr Sudhir Chaddha (Urologist)

Expenses Incurred so far:

On being brought to the hospital, the patient had to be examined on an emergency basis in Private OPD and the tests cost the family Rs. 20,000

The donor was examined in General OPD at a cost of Rs. 4000

The patient has been put on the drug Ceptum 500 mg which costs Rs. 100 per tablet.

                                                        Expected Expenses

Dialysis has not been started yet but will have to start soon and it will cost Rs. 5000 per session.

The patient's condition has been diagnosed CKD with obstructive uropathy, an acute form of renal disease where inability to pass urine normally due to obstruction has caused damage to his kidneys. This will require kidney transplant, as mentioned earlier, and the surgery costs around Rs. 6 lakh. The date of surgery is 25th of March, 2012.

There's no availability of bed in General OPD (cheaper). Beds are available only in Private OPD but the family cannot afford it as it costs Rs. 5000 per night. However, the patient is going to need admission soon.

The patient, Jalal, is being attended to by his sister and her brother Javeed Ahmad. Far away from home, Javeed is struggling to afford an extensive and prolonged treatment to his ailment which, if left untreated, would turn his condition critical. His CT scan report from the hospital is enclosed below.

This is a fervent appeal to all who could to step forward and join hands in contributing to his treatment.

Dear Kiran,
Here are the details of the six-year-old boy, Aniket Uday Valanju, who needs to be operated upon for ASD (Atrial Septal Defect). He is being treated by Dr S. S. Rao from Kokilaben Ambani Hospital. The estimated cost of the surgery is Rs 1,50,000 from admission to discharge.

It would be wonderful if his father, our office boy, Uday Valanju could be helped with monetary donations. The cheques / Demand drafts should be drawn in favour of 'Mandke Foundation'.

Appeal for Help : Youth needs funds for kidney transplant

6 lakh.

Subject: urgent need for blood platelets

One of my close  friends and colleagues  , Pradeep Behera , is undergoing treatment at P.D. Hinduja Hospital, for carcinoma - colon as well as impacted tumour on the coccyx. He is undergoing chemo and needs blood platelets urgently  as they keep reducing at an alarming rate .

The hospital wants healthy male donors below 50 who would be  screened for suitability to donate blood for platelets. Thereafter, suitable donors shall be contacted for donation of blood platelets, as need arises, since blood platelets have a limited shelf life.

Further the hospital has also  advised  that the donors should have a body weight of at least 60 kilograms and should not currently be under medication nor have suffered from Jaundice, malaria or typhoid in the last one year.

In case you know of anyone who is willing to donate platelets could you let me know and I'll put them in touch with my colleagues in Mumbai ?

A young man with a head injury needs a job

We received this request from Vaibhav Patil who has been actively helping IH cases, most notably Poonam Singh who was injured in 26/11 and needed physiotherapy.
If there is any organisation which could help him get a job or rehabilitated do let us know, he is literate and has studied up to SYBcom. He was working as a general workman at a company in Trombay when he was injured.

"I am attaching along a bio data of 22 yr old Siddhesh who met with an accident on 14/08/2009 and suffered head injury because of which he has been claimed to be 65% disabled. His mother works as a nurse at the K.EM Hospital. Only thing that worries me is his young age and idleness. So,with the help of our blog India Helps,if we can get a small job for him,it would make his life a great difference.
Kindly have a look at the biodata and do the needful.

Dear Friend,

I am writing to you today to help people severely affected by Cyclone Thane which has devastated Cuddalore District in Tamilnadu and Puducherry.

As the rest of India was preparing to celebrate New Year Eve, Cyclone Thane took 48 lives and impacted more than 800,000 people on December 30.

As a first response, our office in Chennai has assessed the extent of damage, and the need of the hour is shelter, electricity and clean water.

CARE is already working with affected families providing them with tarpaulins, candles, matchboxes as well as floor mats and hygiene kits particularly focusing on pregnant mothers and adolescent girls.

Our aim is to reach out to 20,000 most vulnerable families immediately, and going forward build 100-150 low cost houses for the poorest of the poor who have lost their dwellings and have no means to reconstruct them.

These families need Rs 2.5 crores to rebuild their lives. Here and NOW.

While we will pool in our resources, we must reach out for funds from people like you who have helped so many in the past by donating to worthwhile causes.

I look forward to your help and contribution. Please donate online at bit.ly/caredonate OR send your cheque/draft in favour of CARE India to E- 46/12 Okhla Industrial Area, Phase II, New Delhi 110020.

DONATE NOW

Kind Thanks,
