Subject: urgent need for blood platelets

One of my close friends and colleagues , Pradeep Behera , is undergoing treatment at P.D. Hinduja Hospital,for carcinoma - colon as well as impacted tumour on the coccyx. He is undergoing chemo and needs blood platelets urgently as they keep reducing at an alarming rate .

The hospital wants healthy male donors below 50 who would be screened for suitability to donate blood for platelets. Thereafter, suitable donors shall be contacted for donation of blood platelets, as need arises, since blood platelets have a limited shelf life.

Further the hospital has also advised that the donors should have a body weight of at least 60 kilograms and should not currently be under medication nor have suffered from Jaundice, malaria or typhoid in the last one year.

In case you know of anyone who is willing to donate platelets could you let me know and I'll put them in touch with my colleagues in Mumbai ?

A young man with a head injury needs a job

We received this request from Vaibhav Patil who has been actively helping IH cases, most notably Poonam Singh who was injured in 26/11 and needed physiotherapy.
If there is any organisation which could help him get a job or rehabilitated do let us know, he is literate and has studied up to SYBcom. He was working as a general workman at a company in Trombay when he was injured.

"I am attaching along a bio data of 22 yr old Siddhesh who met with an accident on 14/08/2009 and suffered head injury because of which he has been claimed to be 65% disabled. His mother works as a nurse at the K.EM Hospital. Only thing that worries me is his young age and idleness. So,with the help of our blog India Helps,if we can get a small job for him,it would make his life a great difference.

Divya is suffering from Bilateral Profound Sensorineural Hearing Loss according to the findings of Dr.Hetal Marfatia (Consultant ENT Surgeon of KEM hospital).

Treatment Dr. Hetal Marfatia has recommended is Cochlear Implant surgery which is suppose to improve her speech perception, educational and social opportunities and quality of life. She will also require speech therapy for 3 years from recognized center of Cochlear implant.

Under our Project Aadhar, we have taken up this initiative to help her, as she is an orphan and has no one to support her financially for the medical treatments.

This is the report from Linus Chettiar, our team member who had visited him at Harkissondas Hospital.

This evening I met one more Opera House blast victim recuperating at
the Harkishondas Hospital.

Pintu Kumar Yadav (20) hails from Jharkhand, is married and has a kid.
He worked in Sandwhich stall near Opera house.

He has lost his right limb, flesh ripped out from his left limb, private parts injured, lost his left thumb.

He is being attended to by his father who has come from their village.

They are pretty hard up for funds. Father depends on charity of some
people in the hospital for his daily food.

Shot term need : funds for daily sustenance

Long term need : Prosthetic legs and job for Pintu.

Update on Karuna Waghela

Dear All,

I met Karuna and her son today. I gave her clothes for her daughter. But was unable to help her with clothes for her younger son who is in the 2nd standard and for her older son (11 years old ). I will collect and manage to give some clothes in 2 months time - will source from some one in that age group near my home.

Karuna said she is the only child her parents have and she called them here to help as she is out of her home for 10 hours a day. Only the youngest child studies in English medium . She believes that the son who studies in English medium may go places. I explained to her and her son that while" English medium "is good there are Gujarati medium people who are very successful too .

She said that she has been to her in laws and has fought with them asking for at least Rs one lakh for her kids but they have told her she is welcome to come and stay in the village with them as they will shift eventually. That is where the compensation money was used.

She says that she is looking out for an office cleaning job as she is home and can work after 4 p.m. and would like to earn more funds. She is going to her village and once she is back she will look to supplement her income. She told me that her husband used to decorate - had a decoration business and hence they never had to live only on salary when he was alive.

"I am not afraid of working and bringing up my kids alone but I am scared of the cost of things and price hike." In her words -mehengai. She is a fighter and the positive spirit is great.

Pranati came with a relative to my mother's clinic for a check up.
Dr.Singhvi (My mother) has asked her to eat well, she has digestion
problems, has bad eating habits - does not eat nutritious food, and
has a hemoglobin count problem too.
The doctor has prescribed medicines- cost less than Rs 100 and Pranati
paid and has asked her to do a colour sonography after 10 days. I will
pay for the colour sonography.
Based on the sonography further decisions will be taken. My mother
speaks Bengali and that was a huge comfort factor for Pranati. She
will turn 34 this year. She needs to work even if 4 hours a day. She
would like to home at lunch time to see her son who is in the 9th std
now.
First focus - get her health okay.
Next - Job ...she needs to get independent for the long term. Right
now she gets funds.

Help Ashwini Kanugo's family-Orissa floods hero

Received this appeal for help.

Orissa is devastated by floods. Rescue work is overwhelmed with
demand. Brave people are risking their lives to save more.

One such person, Ashwini Kumar died last week after saving 60 people
stranded on a rooftop in the flood. He fell into the water after the
rescue and in spite of being a strong swimmer, was missing for two
days when his body was found. He is to be recommended for the
president's medal for his bravery in saving lives.

He leaves behind a widowed mother and now widowed wife and no male
members in the family - in a rural environment. He had been married
about two months ago. Their family circumstances are not economically
comfortable. They don't have a phone or mobile. To contact them, one
can reach through his uncle, Mr Panchanan Kanungo at 9438360849. While
the honor of a president's medal is great, this family needs support
to sustain themselves. I have not spoken with them. I don't know what
form this support should be, but from what I hear immediately, it
seems some regular financial contributions, at least till a source of
income can be developed would be needed.

Some individuals are stepping up to say they would like to help, but
nothing concrete is known yet. Besides, such support cannot be counted
on to endure once the spotlight is gone.

Madhu is 14 year old but look likes a 4 years old little girl. She is
a bright student of 6th class who wish to become a doctor when she
grow-up. She is suffering from a rare medical condition known as
"Isolated Growth Hormone Deficiency" and currently doing routine
follow-ups at AIIMS Endocrinology OPD to become a normal bubbly girl
of her age.

Madhu belongs to a lower middle class family and her father is a
schoolteacher in a backward region of Nepal, who find it tough to meet
both ends.

Now, the good news for Madhu is that her treatment is possible but the
cost of growth hormone therapy is approximately Rs. 2 Lacs per year
for next 4-5 years. (as per documents provided by AIIMS to this girl).

Many conditions which interfere with children's growth are treatable.
Insulin, growth hormone, thyroid hormone, and now insulin-like growth
factor are medications which are as close to nature as possible.
Children with a wide range of growth deficiencies have had wonderful
results thanks to growth hormone and other treatments.

GH is usually administered as a daily injection under the skin.
Because adults tend to have more side effects than children, their
treatment often begins at a low dose and then is raised gradually.

AIIMS also mentioned in the certificate that in absence of this
therapy , She is likely to suffer from serious physical and social
consequences of short stature and this treatment is essential for her.

Her medical condition has made her mature even before time, but she
love watching hindi movies of her favorite actors Hrithik Roshan and
Preity Zinta and can sing so many beautiful songs if you request.

Like many sick children, Madhu is both symptom and cause. Her lack of
proper treatment is reason enough for not only forcing the
frail-looking girl to miss school for few months while she searches
for some help, but dragging her poor family into debt.

Worldvision relief team are on their way to Mangan Sikh Sangat of
Siliguri likely to go upto Tung on 23rd with necessary relief aid.
Meeting at the Siliguri Gurdwara tomorrow. A Team of SNTM Doctors just
left for Lingzya, Dzongu via Singtam & Dikchu. The team is going on
their own accord, albeit with the knowledge of the Department. This is
not to be taken as a State initiative. The doctors have pooled in
money to hire the vehicles themselves and carry with them as much
medical supplies as they can. The Sikkim Chamber of Commerce is
collecting relief materials, both in cash and kind and sending a team
with supplies to Mangan tomorrow. Anyone willing to support can

inform you that NGOs WWF, KCC, ECOSS, ATREE along with forest
officials and a team of doctors have organised a relief team for
Dzongu. We are taking some supplies up to Lingzya today and hope to

through rough terrain yesterday and managed to recover 5 bodies out of
seven. Sakyong Pentong have been totally cut off and a helicopter team
of SAP is supposed to land there today. VHAS has also sent a team to
Dzongu. Mika and Ugen of MLAS are already working there. The central
Disaster managment team chaps are proving to be a liability - totally
unprepared and unable to cope with the terrain and the people. It is
very surprising that the SAP have till now not been given a proper
role to play in the rescue efforts. ECOSS, KCC and ATREE have donated
Rs 10,000 each and WWF is going to chip in with cash and materials of
around Rs 1-2.5 lakhs. We have started taking donations for the relief
in ECOSS account - Ecotourism & Conservation Society of Sikkim Axis

(Sakyong Penthong) where help has still not reached as it does not
fall in the North Sikkim Highway. I have travelled earlier so much to
North Sikkim and known the steepness of the hills beyond Mangan. It
gives me a sleepless nights to understand how people are coping with
the open air, full of rain and help yet to reach while I rest in a
comfortable bed. So I have started a campaign to help those in need
with my organisation which has been Govt. Registered. My utmost
concern is to help with the major emergency items like Warm blankets,
warm clothes, (As north Sikkim is cold and also winter is
approaching), energy drinks, Torch lights with batteries, portable
tents, vitamins, medicines(common ones like for headache, fever, cold
etc), water bottle, shoes, sleeping mattress, sleeping bags, etc.. I
have also started analysing on Kalimpong villages and found out that
many houses have collapsed. Unfortunately they seem to be the poorest.
Today i am visiting Mangmaya as it happened to my ancestral place and
called by uncle to see many of our BPL neighbours whose house are no
more. Our organisation's name is Glenn Family Foundation Trust which
is locally registered in Kalmipong with local members. We will be
giving tax rebate to those who will financially help as we are
registered under 80G of the Income tax act. Our team will work on a
blog and FB to see how our donations and work is being done. I have
contacted my friends from Sikkim who will coordinate in our
distribution. I will be off to North Sikkim on Monday. Regards/Saom

Arzan Khambata and Akanksha

Between the 2nd of October and the 8th of October, the NGO Akanksha plans to create a large installation at the Pheonix Mills mall at Lower Parel.

Arzan Khambata will build a bamboo enclave that will have buckets of coloured water hanging from the top of the enclave.The bucket will have little holes beneath it. The floor of the enclave will have sheets of canvas with stenciled images of education elements.When swung, the bucket will splatter paint onto the images below. This will be repeated thrice with different colours.

People visiting the installation can opt to buy one of the stenciled images and kind of take a piece of education with him/her, thus contributing to Akanksha's mission. This will be run by Akanksha kids and Arzan himself come to the venue on some of the days during that week.we need large participation.
Please visit Phoenix Mills and participate in this initiative. Akanksha is educating the underprivileged child, and that is a cause which deserves all the support it can get.

What is required is only a sense of empathy, a willingness to help and an ability to listen to what the family needs, make a needs assessment and figure out ways to help the victim/bereaved family for the time it will take to get them on their feet again.
This would entail one initial visit, and one follow up visit every month, and regular telephonic contact and coordination.

This report in from Linus, who visited Harkisondas Hospital last week:

1] Namdeo Guloop
Namdeo Guloop (38 years) lost both his limbs in the Opera House blast and is recuperating in Harkisondas Hospital. He used to work as a courier/peon in the Panchratna building. He has been promised prosthetic limbs by the hospital. He and his family stay in slums at Khar.
He has a wife and three school going children. While two study in Municipal schools in Mumbai, one studies in Raigad in a private school. They opened bank account for the first time to deposit the cheque given by the government. The wife basically was always a homemaker and has no inkling about Mumbai. She needs an escort daily from Khar to the hospital.
The short terms needs are funds required to run the house hold, paying the rent and providing fees for the child's studies. (Rs.500 per month).
In the long term, Namdeo needs a job after he is discharged from the hospital in 2-3 months and finding a home in the lower parts of the slum. Right now they stay on higher ground. In order to get a home in the lower area the deposit is around 45000 thousand and rent of Rs.4-500 per month.

Sahadev Bhuwad (56 years) lost his right limb in the Opera House blast and is recuperating in Harkisondas Hospital. He used to work as a sub-broker peddling rates between traders. He has been promised a prosthetic limb by the hospital. He and his family stay in Bhayander.
His son, Tushar also in the same trade wants a job which will give him a regular income so that he can take of his father, mother and wife. He has done a course in repairing mobiles and would like to start an enterprise repairing them. They are managing to pull on savings. In the long term, Sahadev will need a job and so will his son.

3) Ramlal Yadav
Ramlal Yadav's (51) limbs were badly injured in the Opera House blast and is recuperating in Harkisondas Hospital. His left hand is also badly injured. He used to work as a courier/peon in the Panchratna building. Doctors say that in couple of months he will
recover.
He stays with his family in Wadala. His son attends a Hindi medium municipal school while his daughter was pulled out of
school due to a poor academic record. He would like some funds to run his household for the next few months and will need a job to sustain his family in the long run.

4) Satish Singh
Satish Singh (36) right limb was badly injured in the Opera House blast and is recuperating in Harkisondas Hospital. He used work as a security guard at the Panchratna building. His family is in Bihar and has no home in Mumbai. His father came from Bihar to look after him and stays in the hospital premises. No one from his company has bothered to enquire about him. Doctors say that in couple of months he will recover.
Daily expenses of the father needs to be met and Satish will need a job once he recovers.

India Helps team members visited Rinku Vishwakarma today.
She lives in Sion Koliwada in a tiny room, with her one and a half year old daughter. Her landlady was kind enough to take us to her.
Today was the first month anniversary of her husband's passing away. Rinku is barely 24-25, has studied upto grade 8 and is literate. She knows how to stitch and is keen to start earning a living. Her brother from the village is down to live here with her.
She seems to be a strong person and knows that she has to take charge of her life now.
Our efforts will be to get her some vocational training and eventually a job. If anyone knows of any organisation/NGO that could provide her with training of any sort which would eventually result in a job, please do let us know.
Also if anyone would like to help her financially, do let us know and we will send you the details.

About Patient :

Prema Malla, Female,Age: 55 yrs,Blood Group: B +ve, is suffering from Primary biliary cirrhosis often abbreviated PBC, it is an autoimmune disease of the liver marked by the slow progressive destruction of the small bile ducts. When these ducts are damaged, bile builds up in the liver (cholestasis) and over time damages the tissue. This has led to scarring, fibrosis and cirrhosis.Liver biopsy shows an advanced fibrosis stage (6/6).

Living Donor Liver Transplant(LDLT) is urgently required from a living donor who can donate half of his/her liver. Donor please contact Sandeep Thakur (+919899333866).

The donor operation is entirely safe (To be done in Medicity Medanta by Dr Arvinder Singh Sion) and the half liver quickly regenerates in both the donor and the recipient in a few weeks. In the first few days after operation even when regeneration is not complete, the half liver is enough to maintain normal donor functions due to the immense reserve in the liver.

To donate:

The person must donate of his/her own free will

The person should be between 18-55 years and weigh >50kg

The donor and recipient blood group must match (B +ve)

The donor liver structure / function, as well as the other systems must be normal

Half of the donor liver must be enough in volume for the recipient

The suitability in the above respects and some other technical points is determined by the Transplant Team in Pre-transplant donor evaluation which normally takes 2-3 days.

Facts about liver donation surgery:

Modern liver cutting techniques using CUSA have made it safe and blood less

Normal liver has immense reserve - nearly 70% of liver can be safely removed although much less is removed

Normal liver grows back very quickly - it can be restored to normal size after removal of half the liver in just 2 weeks

After operation, the donor will stay in hospital for 5-10 days. Another 3-4 weeks of recuperation is required at home. After that, the donor can resume normal activity (except strenuous physical exercise) and return to work 6 weeks after surgery. Sexual activity can be resumed as soon as the donor feels well enough. Heavy physical activity, sports including lifting weights can be resumed 3 months after surgery.

There are no dietary or any other restrictions, and the donor leads a completely normal life with normal liver function without any decrease in the longevity of life or any other long-term consequences.

Among more than 7000 donor operations worldwide, 6 deaths have been reported which gives an expected mortality of around 0.1 %.

This is a personal appeal from my side for contribution towards medical expenses of Pratiksha Jadhav, the daughter of my maid Preeti Jadhav.

Partiksha all of 14 years of age is a very bright student studying at the Versova Welfare School and is the only child of Preeti, a single parent having no relatives in mumbai. A week back Pratiksha has been admitted in a semi paralyzed state to the Belle-Vue Nursing Home at Manish Nagar, Andheri. Post a plethora of expensive tests she has been diagonised with Guillian Barre' Syndrome http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001704/, which is more frightening than it sounds. This little understood infection which is still in the realm of medical research is specific to asian countries, attacks the immunological system and results in an individuals defence system attacking the victims own body. Survival rates are not very good but are known to be better for youngsters.

Currently, the only course recommended this infection is a daily dose of 3 immununoglobulins injections over a period of 5 days, a total of 15. Each injections costs around Rs. 15,000/- which we have managed to negotiate down to Rs. 10,000/-. The entire cost of this immediate treatment is currently around Rs. 2 Lacs and I am enclosing a letter from the hospital for the same. Preeti works hard all day long to provide the best education for her only child and earns an monthly income of around Rs. 10,000/- and pays a rent of Rs. 4,000/- and has fixed deposits of around Rs. 40,000/. This situation is clearly beyond her financial means. Post this treatment which should save Pratiksha's life, medication would be needed for most of her life.

The Shingwekar family has made substantial contributions and is committed to bringing in more cash for the treatment. Several other families who know Preeti are also pitching in. I have already spoken to a few charitable trusts who have promised all help.

If you would like to contribute to Pratiksha medical treatment (it would be perfectly alright if you don't), you can make a cheque directly in the name of Belle Vue Nursing Home. I can assure you that my own self and my immediate family would be involved in the actual usage of your contribution and receipts for the same would be drawn in your name.

My wife Mrs. Anita Mukund Agrawal met with a serious road accident on Friday, 11^th March, 2011. While waiting at bus stop of Eastern Express Highway at Kannamwar Nagar, Vikhroli (East) Mumbai 83, she was dashed by a very rash motorbike rider. Due to this, she suffered multiple brain injuries as well as multiple fractures to spine, pelvis, left leg etc. The accident has left her in a semi vegetative state.

After this accident, she was admitted to Fortis Hospital at Mulund (west) after a gap of almost three hours. During this period, she could not get proper medical treatment and went in coma. From Fortis Hospital, she was shifted to Gokul Nursing Home for two months. After almost three months of hospitalization, because of financial constraints, I shifted her to our home in second week of June. She is still in a state of unconsciousness and is fighting for her life. Her parameters are uneven and if she does not get proper treatment, the future is bleak.

Due to my own health problems, I am away from my job for the past three years and whatever savings I had, were exhausted to meet the medical bills. So during the long hospitalization, I borrowed money from relatives and well-wishers as I was not in a position to bear the medical expenses. Even today, to provide the necessary medication etc I am spending an average of R 75,000 per month and this has put severe stress on me as I have no other way to meet the medical expenses. I have three young children, one of whom is in college and the younger two in school. I do not have any other options or sources left to bear these expenses and I am hoping for organizations, trusts or individuals with a charitable outlook to provide much needed help to save my wife's life.

So, I earnestly appeal to you all to come forward and give me and my family your best possible. For this, I and my family will be highly grateful to you for the rest of our whole lives and pray to Almighty to give you very best in life. His arteries have begun to leak and they're hoping to try and operate on the tumors if possible. This was unexpected and puts this case on our Top Priority. We read about Rinku Vishwakarma in the newspapers. Her husband,
Makeshwar Vishwakarma had been critically injured in the Kabutarkhana
blasts. She, we read, had been waiting outside the ICU at KEM
hospital, without having eaten a single morsel, with her two year old
daughter for the past two days. We requested a Midday reporter to pass
her our contact details in the event that she needed any help. A day
went by with no call. Yesterday, we got a call from her. Her daughter
was running a high fever, and she sent her back to her neighbours in
Sion to be cared. Her inlaws have come down from UP to be with her in
these times. She needed some financial help, and India Helps sent
across a small amount to tide her over these few days in the hospital
and for her daughter's medicines. Parul Sharma of the IH team will be
coordinating this case, and we will be doing a follow up visit soon.
If anyone would like to help her, please do get in touch. Right now,
as we see it, the wait is for her husband to recover, and then do a
needs assessment. Will keep you posted. Watch this space.

Friends, last year winter was painful for the underprivileged village kids. For
the kids of the few of the villages we have taken up few small initiatives like
providing clothes, books & toys to them. These few villages are located at the
outskirts ofBhopalhave the residents living below poverty line. The men and
women of these villages work as daily wage labourer and are hand to mouth. Last
year in the month of December- January 2010 the winter was very chilled in
Bhopal particularly the nights and these made the condition of the people very
pathetic. More worse was the condition of the children. They won't have proper
woollens and were shivering due to severe cold. Ahambhumika launched a campaign
for the collection of woollen clothes for these children and were able to
succeed to have around 40 sweaters only while the requirement was quite high.
Viewing the scarcity of sweaters lastly we distributed clothes in 4-5 pairs to
the children so that they could be saved from winter up to some extent from
severe cold.
Learning a lesson from this we have initiated a collection campaign of sweaters
before time this year. During forthcoming winter we need around 500 sweaters for
the kids. Their age ranges from 4 to 8 years. We shall be obliged to you for the
support. Even a sweater old or new donated by you will be an immense help to us
as well as to the needy kids. We can accomplish this goal only with the support
of you generous people. You can donate old or new sweaters and may courier it to
us. Even a single sweater donated by you could save a kid. And is not it worthy
to save a needy kid from severe winter? Winter is a nightmare for them due to
lack of proper woollens.

Here are 6 critical requirements, ways to engage to strengthen the work. Do read, revert, act and pass on the message to your friends, colleagues and relatives if you think they can also join this movement!!

1. TEAM 2000: It’s about bringing together a strong team of 2000 people who contribute a sum of Rs. 10,000/- or more in a year. (About $ 250 or just about Rs. 800/- a month) It’s NOT like an EMI or a lifelong commitment. Give till you feel comfortable or trust the work. Commit less or more…although we are looking for 2000 people to commit Rs. 10,000/- or more... Apart from taking care of major regular expenses, the money will be used for growth, expansion and wider replication.

We are sure that it is achievable and like all other initiatives of GOONJ, we want TEAM 2000 also to be driven by the volunteers.. do sign up, spread the word, talk to people to join TEAM 2000.A simple form is enclosed giving the money transfer options. Contributions in India are tax exempted u/s 80G of IT act.

2. Vehicles: With the spread, transport cost has gone up and material inflow at GOONJ is increasing. Pick up vans are an immediate need in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata & Jalandhar (@ approx 4.5 lakh rupees). An Informal group, Focus India Forum from Singapore has just taken care of the vehicle in Chennai. Possible contacts with vehicle companies or to get the discounted rates are welcome.

3. Computers/laptops: For the past many years we have somehow managed with the used lot of computers. Now when we are focusing on MIS, trying to use technology to maximize the potential, we need high end, good systems. Laptops are preferred as most team members spend a lot of time in the field. Our requirement is of 25 Computers/laptops and 7 printers/photocopy machines .

4. Transport support: or linkages with transport companies to reach out material to hundreds of towns/villages across the country.

5. Space: We are looking for about 2000 sq. ft. space for a processing centers/storage in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Jalandhar, Chennai and Hyderabad either pro-bono or on minimum possible rent. Chennai and Hyderabad are most urgent.

6. Linkages with garment industry people: primarily dealing with cotton and hosiery surplus, under/non utilized material.We are producing about 2,00,000 (2 lakh) sanitary pads and undergarments for women right now and the demand is much more !!

Dear All,

Gyaneshwar Dagdu Shinde has broken a bone in the leg .Wife and
daughter work are working in household jobs. He paid with his funds for an operation at Mahim. That did not go well and the bone was set
wrongly . The family has spent over a lakh in the past over two
operations.

He under went treatment for I T fracture ferum, right leg. He was
operated for DHS fixation in august, 2010, which was revised after 4
months. The bone has not united and hence he has to get a bipolar hip
replacement. The approx cost of just the implant is 50,000 and he
needs another 50,000 to cover the doctor expense and nursing home
stay.

I have raised Rs 25,000 thru Panchtatva and am looking at raising Rs 70,000

It is a genuine case and I can vouch for it. Can we raise funds ?
Funds can be transferred to his daughter's account . He heads for
surgery tomorrow.

Update from Bandra Garib Nagar

The situation in Garibnagar Bandra, where more than 2500 houses were burnt is
still critical and thousands of people are still languishing in the streets. A
relief camp has been set up collectively by YUVA, CCDT, KSWA, ASEEMA and Plan
India.

Food and cloths are pouring in as relief. MCGM has set up mobile toilets and
the sulab toilet has been made free. Two medical camps have been set up in the
area. Doctors from CSSC and Holy Family are also giving free treatment to the
affected people. Utensils and mats are being distributed by TV 9 channel.We will
issue an appeal if we need anything more.

An attempt is being made to coordinate between the various relief camps and
children are being assisted to go for examinations in the school.

Panchanamas has started and the intervention was to get panchanama of both
owners and tenants. This is where the concentration is presently involved.

along with Mr. Devdatta Deshpande of Plan India and Pramod Nigudkar of CCDT and

Aparna and Shyaam finally made it official, and Dilnavaz tied the knot with her beau Abhi. We had a long overdue celebratory lunch at Barbeque Nation yesterday. Since neither Abhi nor Shyaam could make it to the lunch, here's Dilnavaz and Aparna feeding the cake to each other.

Dear Friends,

Hope you are well and had a great beginning to the new year.

I am writing to ask for some help, hoping you will consider this
request and also pass this letter along to others.

You might have heard about the landslides in Uttarakhand due to the
heavy rains in September 2010. Along with the destruction of lives and
property, the disaster also made the areas inaccessible, making it
difficult to send aid for the affected people. The people have been
trying to pick up the pieces and reconstruct their lives to start a
fresh new year. To aid in this, Dinesh, a young person from
Uttarakhand whom I know has been trying to collect and transport
relief materials for the affected people. With support from Goonj, a
very active relief agency, he has been able to get a large amount of
material including clothes, ration materials, household items etc for
500 affected families in the area. The transport of the material (100
gunny bags) to Almora and then the affected villages requires a total
of 22,000 rupees. We are trying to raise this money through donations
from friends and supporters. I am forwarding Dinesh's request for help
and attaching a letter that he has written with this email.

Dinesh is from a small village called Garam Paani situated close to
Almora and has been working on social issues with local people
independently for the last few years. He does not have a registered
organisation and has sought support from a local body called for
managing the accounting and proper use of these funds. I have
volunteered to collect in Delhi and send to Dinesh by the 31st of
January. Even small contributions would go a long way in ensuring that
the materials reach the right people in time and I strongly urge you
to donate whatever you wish and can spare for this cause. I know
Dinesh and can vouch for his good intentions and commitment towards
the local people.

I am based in Delhi and can organise to meet you and collect your
contribution. Any contribution and your support in forwarding this
request to others would be of immense help.

The Street School For Street Kids had their Annual party on 26th December Sunday at Prabodhan Hall, Goregaon West. There were 150 kids who attended the party. You can imagine the excitement levels of these kids and when the games began it was hard to control them! The kids had lots of fun with games and prizes to be won followed by a magic show organised specially for them! Though we had planned to wrap up the party by noon it went on way past 1 o'clock.

The party was special for all these kids but what made it very special was lots of kind hearted souls who came forward and chipped in with their contributions. Many people had also written to us with a desire to contribute. Thank you so much for writing in to us! It means a lot.

So three cheers to all you lovely people for going out of your way to bring a smile on our kids' faces.

On behalf of the team I would like to thank Prabodh Desai for organising the hall for us and also the snacks from the Prabodhan canteen. We work with about 150 students and run 45 classes a week from a small house in Khan Market where my family and I live as well, and two tiny quarters in Sujan Singh Park. Apart from classes in English, Maths & Computers, we have been giving equal importance to the opening of young minds, broadening of their horizons and the enhancement of their self-expression, confidence and creativity through the Arts, like Theatre, Dance and Music. Although this has been difficult logistically, through determination and perseverance, we have been at it for the last 13 years. However, to continue our journey any further, we need your help.

Within the coming year, we will be moving out and, after 13 years, the house in Khan Market will not be available for this work. Consequently, we'll be shifting all operations to Sujan Singh Park. Managing over 150 students and 45 classes per week from two small quarters will be difficult, as I am sure you can imagine. Unfortunately, due to space limitations at Sujan Singh Park, we will have to discontinue our theatre, dance and music classes.

This is where you can help. If you have a place, or know of someone who has, in the vicinity of Khan Market, where our dedicated students can practice, please let us know if you'd like to put it to good, responsible use for the larger benefit of society, for only a small part of time per week.

We will need the space for about 8 hours a week, though we are flexible. And whenever you need it back, we'll be out, instantly (although it would be helpful if you can let us know a little in advance so we can make alternate arrangements much the same way as we are doing now. That said, we do understand that sometimes it is not possible to notify in advance and that would be fine too).

I know that such things can't be decided over long-distance, so if you have even the slightest possibility or inclination, I request you for a personal audience where we can speak of any concern or question that you might have. And, if you so prefer, I'd be thrilled to discuss what excites both you and us about this collaboration.

26/11 – Two years and counting.

It has been two years since five terrorists ripped into our city's peace creating havoc, despair and a sense of vulnerability nothing has been able to restore.

It has also been two years since a group of shaken up, but determined women (and a couple of men) set out to address the unease inside them, the angst and desperation of wanting to reach out, met in a coffee shop. It has been two years since they embarked on a journey of help and support, and came together to from India Helps.

India Helps is not an organization, it isn't a company and it isn't a professionally managed Not For Profit. It is a part of each and every one of the people present in that first meeting, and those that joined after. India Helps has a heart, and soul. It has ethics and morals. It is a reflection of all the hard work that's been put into creating it. Reaching out to victims, fund raising, managing professional and personal lives and most of all, dealing with our own feelings and trying not to be overwhelmed with the victims trauma are just some examples of the work that's gone into India Helps.

India Helps has grown. Where we started with a few 26/11 victims, we now raise funds for pavement schools, teaching over 200 underprivileged children with limited or no access to education.

As we mourn the loss of family, friends and other victims of the attacks, we also in a small, muted way celebrate the strength with which India Helps moves into 2011. Eveready and Energized to go. With renewed faith we await new avenues of reaching out to people.

We'd like to thank all those of you who follow our blog, write in to us, have sent us funds. India Helps would not have sustained such active fundraising if it hadn't been for benevolence such as the kind we've received from you all. Thank you, truly.

SaveLIFE Foundation

SaveLIFE Foundation is a public charitable trust registered under sections 12AA and 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. As you are perhaps aware, India has the dubious distinction of being world no. 1 in road accident deaths. Every 4 minutes someone loses their life in a road accident somewhere in India. A major reason of such a high number of deaths is that almost 80% victims are unable to achieve access to any care within the first hour of the accident, often called the Golden Hour. Bystanders merely serve as spectators and Police is largely apathetic and untrained to handle the injured. It is a known medical fact that if bleeding can be controlled in time or CPR administered within 15 mins of the pulse stopping, hundreds of lives, which are otherwise lost, can be saved.

Our objective, therefore, is: 1) To train Police to save road accident victims as they are in most cases the first official agency to respond; this training develops the skill-base as well as the emotional quotient of Police officers dealing with road victims, and 2) To train & connect common citizens to help road accident victims. The idea is also to work with the government to create legal and ethical standards for common people to feel free to help road victims. Given that we provide this training for free (and there's a well thought-out reason behind that), we have exhausted almost all of our available funds and are struggling to continue training the Police in Delhi. I am therefore contacting several people for help. Each training session caters to 50 police officers and costs us Rs. 5,000 at the very least. In order to complete the training of remaining Police officers we need to raise Rs. 100,000. Given that we are registered under Section 80G of IT Act, donors will get income tax benefit, and on our part we will provide complete details including pictures, names, belt numbers and zones of the Police officers being trained.

A mail on the Independence Trash Dash for Mumbaikars

For the 5th consecutive year, this 2nd of October, the Natura Outdoor
Education Trust (NOET) in collaboration with the Rotract Club of
Mumbai Downtown, will host the Independence Trash Dash for Mumbaikars
at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park to do their bit for the country's
forests and enjoy themselves while doing it. ReefWatch is volunteering
by providing volunteers to help manage the crowd, organize the clean
up and help collect and manage the trash

The Trash Dash is essentially a crazy-fun Clean-up Marathon in the
Sanjay Gandhi National Park(SGNP), which sees people of all ages
scramble through the forest, trying to collect the most amount of
garbage; while at the same time having themselves a great time with
the many games and activities along the way.

This year, Trash Dash aims to involve 100 participants in clearing out
almost 1 tonnes of garbage out of our city's precious forests.

Despite reports about aid coming for the family, India Helps decided
to visit the family and file a first hand report. Sumita and Sayantani
visited the family, and this is what they wrote in:

Dear all

Sayantani and Sumita met Shyam Sundar Chaudhary and his wife Baby
Chaudhary on Wednesday, September 22, 2010.

Shyam Sundar's parents and sister also stay with them. Baby Chaudhary
came across as a confident woman who knew what she wanted and seemed
to be able to handle all the press coverage and incessant phone calls
fairly well. First off, she clarified that she did not want mercy
killing for her husband; rather she wanted help with the medical
expenses.

Between phone calls, she told us that they have two children - a son
who studies in Class IV in St. Xaviers in Santa Cruz (W) and a
daughter who studies in Class I in Nanavati Public School in Vile
Parle (W). After 26/11, the Taj Trust had stepped in to pay the
children's fees, which is presently about 10k for the son and 25.5k
for the daughter. The daughter's school has several facilities and is
therefore a lot more expensive. The Taj Trust has expressed
reservations about being able to continue to pay fees for the daughter
if it increases by a huge margin after this, which Baby said, may well
be possible as the daughter went to higher grades in school. She
seemed reluctant however to move her daughter to a less expensive
school, as Shyam Sundar really wanted her to attend a school with all
facilities. She also mentioned that the son's fees may drop a little
once he reaches Class V. Apart from this; the children also attend a
tuition class, which comes to about an aggregate of Rs. 1.5k for both
the children.

Regarding Shyam Sundar, she said that doctors had said that recovery
could take between six months and two years. While Taj Trust was
paying for the medical expenses incurred at KEM Hospital, where Shyam
Sundar is undergoing treatment, the costs of medicines and other
things like milk, fruits, creams and extra medicines etc. was not
covered and she mentioned that it all added up to a significant amount
- approx. 8 to 10k a month.

In terms of groceries and supplies, she mentioned that she'd been
getting calls from people willing to help her out and her neighbors,
who were vegetable vendors, gave her vegetables sometimes. Whilst we
were there, she got a call from people who wanted to come over with
some provisions.

We also met Shyam Sundar's sister Sujata, who is 23 years old and has
studied till Class XI. Before Shyam Sundar's condition deteriorated,
she was planning to enroll for a beautician's course, which has now
been put on hold in light of her need to stay at home.
(She wants to join Javed Habib classes as she thinks she will get
exposure to models etc. His fee is atleast 25,000/- . If she has
interest and capability she can join a YMCA kind of place which help
with vocational training this will be cheaper and safer for her too.
Need to talk to her about this)

Baby also mentioned that the Taj Trust had called her for training
from October 4, and promised her a job if she managed to successfully
compete the training and pass all other necessary tests and exams. At
present, Baby is not working anywhere, so the family has no source of
income.

Possibly, if Baby gets a job, and Sujata gets a job too after
completing the beautician's course, the family's earnings would
stabilize a little.

Their immediate requirements are as follows:

(i) Regular source of provisions (depends on how long and how much the
other people willing to help her, actually help); and
(ii) Money for the varied requirements of Shyam Sundar.

Long term requirements:

(i) Job for Baby (hopefully Taj should be able to help here); and
(ii) Enrollment in a beautician's course for Sujata (so that she can
chip in too when she finishes and gets a job);
(iii) Monetary help for better medical facilities. Shayam's could be a
long stretched ailment which needs extensive physiotherapy.

I am a class teacher for 50 second graders teaching in a low income school Sri Ram Vidya Mandir in Kandivali (E).

As a Teach For India fellow, my job is to bridge the achievement gap that exists between a 2nd grader from a low income school and his counterpart in a high end private school. My kids come in with a lag of one year in physical growth and mental development; and two years of academic lag and the rote learning they have been through, they are a good two years(min) behind their wealthier counterparts.

A simple goal: 2 years of academic development in a single year for every one of my 50 kids!!

My Aim: to make the next two years experiential and motivational for my class, my school and the community from where they come. These children have never been to a movie theatre, never dined at a restaurant, never met firemen, or police women. Update on Paralysis Patient at JJ

With reference to our last post about the paralysis patient at JJ hospital who needed a series of 5 injections to stave off paralysis, India Helps, Panchtatva and Rotary Club (Thank you everyone!) raised funds to contribute towards these injections. This is Sayantani's update on the case:

Spoke to Dr. Jadhav. He said the injections have been given for Vithal Bhoi (that's the name of the patient) and he's recovering, though slowly. As of now, there has been an improvement of about 15 - 20% and he's still in the CCU.

He said we can't meet him while he's in the CCU and that we can visit him once he's in the regular ward. Requested him to let us know as soon as that happens.

Here I have posted pictures from my recent visit to Leh after the cloud burst disaster. The area is certainly devastated – financially, geographically and more importantly psychologically. Imagine a place known for dry mountains and mud houses, where people had never seen rain water in the lanes. All they had seen was the melted water from the glaciers. In comparison to other disasters in the past, the number of people affected might sound less but in a population of around 20,000, 200 recovered dead bodies, 500 missing people, hundreds of houses totally crumbled, heavy loss to crop, cattle and property is not a small loss. Many families have been wiped off completely; even the dead bodies are still under the 6-7 ft. of mud, which suddenly entered their homes as they were sleeping.

Like in many past disasters, GOONJ will be working through local people/partners and will be focusing on gap areas. The prime concern is the upcoming winter. In winters the temperature of Leh goes down to -20 degree centigrade and this time due to lack of homes its going to be quite a miserable time. There is also a bigger question of food security as the affected people have lost the stocks they created to use in the 6 months of harsh winters..

There are certain specific requirements, which are listed below. As the transportation cost is really high for this area it'll not be feasible to collect material all across and transport. We are therefore planning to do essential purchases from nearby cities.

Dry ration- Rice, pulses, biscuits, packed eatables

Good quality woolen and blankets
Tarpaulins and thick plastic sheets
Export surplus/ Cotton cloth for making sanitary napkins
Cooking and water storage utensils/buckets

Hi,

Met the patient at JJ today. It is a genuine case, with the patient below poverty line - is a BPL card holder. Due to his economic status, JJ will cover all costs relating to the hospital stay, but due to the cost of the injections, they need help with that.

Paralysis had affected his legs first and has now moved up to his waist. However, if injections are given within a period of 2 weeks from the date of paralysis, there is an 80% chance of recovery. The patient has received one dose yesterday night, so some movement seems to have been restored to his legs. The medicines need to be continued for 5 days and the doses need to be given on consecutive days, else there is no point.

Each injection costs about Rs. 25k, total of Rs. 1.26 L.

They have also spoken to other donors, notably, the social workers at St. George's Hospital, so even if we manage to cover 2 days, possibly others will chip in for the rest. Of course, it would be great if we could cover all.

The injection is called IvIG and 20g of this medicine are needed each day. The injection is not stored in the hospital, but bought as per requirement, so we can either buy the injections directly or chip in and give the funds to the hospital.

In the event that we're chipping in, cash is welcome, so is cheque payment. In case of cheque, the payment is to be made to the pharmacy from which the medicines are bought. So a crossed cheque with the name blank and amount filled in can also be given, and we can fill in the name as and when we get to know of it.

The last dose was bought from Vama Lifecare at Dadar, in case any one wishes to buy the injection directly instead of chipping in for cash.

The contact persons at JJ Hospital are Dr. Mane (+919975720781) and Mr. Sanjay Ninave (+919222481551) - latter is the pharmacist and would be able to help out with details like dosage etc.

If we can collect something by end of any day, I can collect it and give it to the hospital next day. Do let me know.

Hope you are doing swell. I am trying to help this boy called Dheeraj get a job in Delhi/ NCR (have attached his CV).

He is a good kid (around 25 years or so) who had to start working prematurely when his father was injured and paralysed. He became a cab driver full-time and that is how I met him. Being a single woman in Noida, I would rely on him heavily to drive me around, safely.

Education-wise he has a trade certification from ITI in machine knowledge, and is doing a mechanical engineering course through correspondence. Since his knowledge of cars was decent, he was absorbed as a quality control trainee at Honda, but his one-year training is coming to an end, and they are not making anyone permanent. His correspondence programme does not interfere with the employment.

He has good knowledge of quality control for automobiles, but is also capable of doing some sort of office management job and is familiar with MS Office. He is also a quick learner. I can vouch for his sincerity, honesty and hardworking nature.

If you have any contacts in Delhi who would be in a position to help him find a job (HR, entrepreneurs etc), would be great if you could put this kid through to them. Feel free to forward the mail. Essentially, he needs a stable job that pays his salary on time. He is the only earning member and needs to support his pop/ mom/ bro and wife (he was married when 21). Thanks much for your time.

Spoke to Purnima about a week or so ago. They've gone back to her home town and they seem to have settled down nicely. She said she has good help, an able physiotherapist and a kindly pharmacist. She seemed very relieved and her voice was a lot lighter.

She thanked me and IH over and over again and also extended a warm invitation to Sue and me to visit her. She said this repeatedly.

The only help she requested from us is when and if there is ever a medical emergency, that we help her with funds. I said of course.

It felt good speaking to her. She sounded happy.

The Hunted – India's national animal has a threatened future. This film by Jay Mazoomdaar tells us why.

The Silenced Witness – Very soon, one may not know what an elephant looks like because their species is under severe threat by poachers. A film by P. Balan and Radha R.

Diminishing Resources is a film about the gradual loss of coral reefs across the vast coastline of India owing to selfish needs of human beings. This film by Himanshu Malhotra and Sabina Kidwai tell us how we can help protect them.

Once there was a Purple Butterfly - This film by Sonya V. Kapoor focuses on the crimes against butterflies.

Leopards in the lurch is a film about how leopards fall prey to the ignorance of villagers. A film by Gurmeet Sapal.

All the above films were selected for the UK Environment Film Fellowships in 2006 and were produced by the UK Government. The duration of each film is 15 minutes.

Target audience: Students from class 8 to 10 and above

Duration of the session: 1 hour (inclusive of 2 films, 2 small quizzes, question-answer session and a talk about what one can do to protect the environment).

Charges: Rs. 500 (per session)

Why I want to screen these films at schools and colleges

Mankind is highly responsible for the extent of damage caused to the ecosystem. The visible effects of climate change and the destruction of forest and wildlife resources are just a few.

I wish to create awareness among people regarding such crucial issues and I have begun with schools to try and make a better-informed generation of youth.

Last year in June, a group of friends and me staged a street play outside Ambarnath railway station, thus beginning the Nature Baba campaign. We also planted over 120 trees across the town of Ambarnath, over 80 of which stand strong and are growing healthily.

Hi all,
I accompanied Balaji to meet Mr. Deepak Bhatia of the Taj Trust this morning. Mr. Bhatia asked him detailed questions regarding the 26/11 incident, his family demographics, income, etc. I had asked Balaji to get fee receipts for both his children and he also brought along their latest mark sheets and certificates from the school vouching that they were both students there. Mr. Bhatia said they would support the children's education, but was unhappy that Balaji's son Dipak had failed in 3 subjects (Hindi, Marathi, Social Sciences) in the 5th grade. He said they ask two things of parents whose children's education they support: 1. that attendance is at least 90% 2. that scores are acceptable--at least passing, preferably first class. He also asked whether a tuition teacher had been employed, to which Balaji replied in the affirmative.
I listed all of Balaji's expenses this year related to his children's schooling and Mr. Bhatia took a copy. The annual total comes to Rs. 6050/- for both children. Taj is willing to give Balaji a cheque for the amount. He needs to locate the uniform receipt and hand it over, he has given them the school fee receipts, but says the school doesn't give one for computer fees. He will also look into getting a monthly bus pass and let us and Taj know the amount. Mr. Bhatia needs the information before July 7th. Balaji was very intimidated by the security procedures employed at Oxford House, so I may need to collect the receipts from him and drop them off.

He also said that the govt. compensation received after 26/11 was divided between him and his siblings and he has invested his share. He appears to be doing okay. His job involves sweeping train compartments and filling water in the CPW dept. and he is currently on a night shift. Gets about Rs.10,000/- a month. His younger brother is now driving the autorickshaw he used to drive. The sisters' husbands seem to have found jobs and are living independently. His wife is not working. The daughter is doing okay at school but the son likes playing up. His leg does experience spasms occasionally, and hurts when he walks a lot, but otherwise he is doing better. The family seems okay, although I personally feel it can't be mentally healthy for the poor man to work daily where his mother was killed and he was maimed, but I suppose that's a minor consideration. It was good to see him back on his feet.

My name is Elizabeth Sholtys, and I'm the founder of an organization called the Ashraya Initiative for Children (AIC). AIC is a completely secular non-profit organization that works in Pune with street children, orphans, denotified tribes and slum communities in the areas of health, education, microfinance, community development and advocacy. So why am I writing to you? I need your help. Or, more accurately, kids in Pune need your help. AIC is in the running for $250,000 through the Chase Community Giving contest via Facebook. We're currently #36 in the list of more than 500,000 organizations (!), and are trying to secure more votes to move up to be within the top 5. Each organization within the top 200 will receive $20,000, but if we can make it to the top 5, we will receive $100,000 when the contest ends on July 12th. Only American organizations are eligible to compete, so there are very few other organizations that work in India participating in the contest, and in fact, many of the other high-ranking organizations in the contest are cat and dog shelters and animal rescue foundation groups in the US. While I'm sure that these other groups are also worthy causes, I feel strongly that vulnerable children in India should receive priority over stray animals in the US in terms of receiving the prize money, and I would very much like to stir up Indian support so that we can bring this prize money to India to benefit needy children here.

We are about as grassroots as they come - run exclusively by unpaid Directors and 100% of our funding comes from donations. As we try to minimize our administrative overhead (and therefore have no designated marketing/PR budget), I'm writing to bloggers and forums to help me get the word out about this contest and drum up support for our organization, particularly from within India and Indian communities outside of India.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would be willing to help AIC by posting a message to your blog/supporters, telling them about this contest, and directing them to the site (link is below). Voting is completely free and takes only a minute (literally!). Please help us stay in the top 200, and maybe even work our way up to the top 5 by spreading the word! It will make a huge difference in the lives of the children and families that we work with in Pune. The HOPE TRUST was promoted in Madurai on June 13, 2008 as a public charitable Trust with the core objective of enhancing access to quality education for the orphans. The Trust believes that simple interventions to address the basic needs of orphans can bring a remarkable difference in their lives.

The Trust has established programmes centered on education for nearly 2000 orphans studying in Government schools of Madurai for the last two years through child sponsorship, support structure, personality development programmes helping students shape their attitude, learning acceleration programme (bridge school) and computer literacy programme. In the year 2010-2011, the Trust is planning to distribute uniforms, notebooks and other stationeries to 250 orphan girls to enable them continue their studies.

Requirements

Uniform for 100 girl children @ Rs.250 per children
Notebooks – Long size unruled 192 pages (100 children * 5 notebooks per children @ Rs.20 per notebook) = Rs. 10,000
Stationeries- pen, pencil, box, sharpener, scale, eraser, bag, slipper for all 250 girl children.
